Making a house a home...what a nightmare!

Most people, that I know anyway, LOVE the idea of decorating their home. They love picking out paint, drapery, bedding, and finding all the fun coordinating pieces to make their rooms fun and appealing to others. I AM NOT ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE!! I am so frustrated with trying to figure out what color to paint the walls, what color the furniture should be, what colors that counter tops should be, how we should set up the furniture, etc. I even tried to apply for one of those TV shows on HGTV to have someone else come and do it, but unfortunately I do not live in New York or anywhere in California. Bummer!

Scott and I took some time to go down to the city on Monday to take a look at counter tops, area rugs and cabinet doors for the kitchen. When we found the house, our initial thought was we would update the kitchen counter tops to something a little more modern, replace the cabinet doors and hardware, and paint. Sounds pretty easy! Well that was until we walked into one of those fancy schmancy kitchen places that has one hundred and one different options. I mean, how many different styles can a cabinet door have, for pete's sake? So we looked at that, and then we went around to look at counter tops. To us, we'd like to make the kitchen a little warmer so we thought we'd make the counter tops a little darker. There is so much natural sunlight in there that I think it would hold a darker shade easily. Well, do you know there are about fifty thousand different colored counter tops, that all look the same, just a shade off of one another. Some have flicks of blue, some have flicks of black, some have flicks of green, some have flicks of red....ARGH!!!! And don't forget you have to coordinate your counter tops with your appliances, so you don't want to go too dark or too light, but just right! Oh and then there's the whole issue of "well tile is nice and I can do that" says Scott -of-little-free-time. Sure, let's demolish the kitchen so you can do this project yourself (for the first time) while we eat off the floor and have to quaranteen the boys to living only the living room while the kitchen lie in ruins until it's complete. God love ya and your ambition and willingness to try something new hun, but that is surely NOT going to happen on your schedule!

The paint situation is another nightmare. We can't decide on that, until we decide on the furniture. Do we want leather or do we want two coordinating colored pieces? OR do we want a wine colored couch and mocha colored chair? Or would it look better if they matched? Maybe a chocolate brown couch and a chocolate brown chair? No, we can't do that, it will make the room too dark? Oh!! We could do a wine colored couch, with a wine colored chair....but...what color would we do the walls? Well we'll just pick out an area rug. Oh ok....do you want flowers, some crazy design....or do you want a bunch of squares with crazy colors? ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!

And seriously....how many different ways can a couch be constructed? I mean seriously. We sat on about a hundred different couches (in hopes of replacing the one we do have) and each one we sat on was too "staticky", "low", "hard", "bulky", "high", "upright", "small", "not a sleeper", "wrong color". Argh!

So please, if any of you are reading this and want to help save my sanity, come and paint for me...and maybe pick out some furniture too. Oh but in the right color, right size, with a sleeper, don't forget we like burgundy and natural colors, and for the right price. It's not too much to ask is it?

I'd love to help you paint, but unfortunately, it's not advised during pregnancy.

But I'll see what I can do on the furniture front. Where did you go on Monday to look?

We went to the "Home Ghetto" off Portland and Meridian off I-40!! It was fun, but extremely overwhelming!

Oh my, we know the pain of house-shopping. I HATE picking out colors, so I had Bird and my friend Jean do it for me. It's turned out pretty good so far... so yeah check with Bird. She's so hott right now!!

I'm sorta in the same boat. Our walls were painted in an off-white color and I just haven't had the desire to deal with it yet. As for furniture...BROWN LEATHER! So far we've loved it. I love that when Cameron has been sneezing all over it I can just wipe it off and presto, it's sanitary again! I hate to think of all the germs we were sitting on for the last five years... Anyway, we also got the area rug with the squares of color on it and we love it so far. As for kitchen cabinets, I can't help you. But we need to do it, too, (along with our bathroom cabinets, countertops and tile), so let us know what you decide on!

We applied for one of those shows since we live in CA and we didn't get picked, so don't feel too bad! :)
Good Luck with your decorating. -CA Kilgores

oh sister dear! why didn't you ask??? you know i love these kinds of projects! tell me what kinds of furniture pieces you need and an approximate budget. a few pics of rooms/color combos/furniture pieces you've seen and liked (think tearing pages from home mags but over the net) will help me get the style right. I'll be so all over it!

Oh Chrysta!!!! If only you lived closer. I would say to you what many hear on Thursday nights on ABC "Come on Over". I would most certainly put you to work (you're cheap labor right?)
