Oral Surgery: Phase 1 today

Many of you know I've had a 20+ year long issue with my two front tooth. Well to make a very long (20+ years) story short, today they are beginning the implant phase on my front teeth. I AM VERY VERY NERVOUS about this. I've had oral surgery before, but not to this extent.

They are removing my now dead tooth and crown, cleaning out the infection and then graphing my existing bone. In 4-6 months they will go back in and take another look around and then possibly do additional surgery. Then within a year's time I should have my implants. The scary thing is I have to wait a year to see the end result and 2) it's my front tooth, so the fear or having funky mismatched teeth, scares me.

My surgery is in an hour......prayers please

You will do great! This is exactly the kind of thing Karl is doing, and they're getting sooooo good at the implants and the crowns that go on them, that it's ALMOST to the point where they would tell you just to get an implant if you can afford it rather than having root canal treatment! And I'm telling you, Karl has brought home pictures of crowns he has made where it's already inserted and he asks me to choose which is the crown, and it's REALLY hard to tell because they can do full porcelain crowns now and they "stack" translucent porcelain on the outside in various shades so that it looks like a real tooth. The shade matching can be really really awesome, too. When they go to do the crown, make sure they're going to do full porcelain, and if they say they're going to do porcelain fused to metal, definitely question why! There are a few instances still where they need to do that because of strength issues, but make them explain why. If it's just because they don't have enough experience in full porcelain crowns, GET ANOTHER PROSTHODONTIST WHO IS MORE UP TO DATE!!!!!! The outcomes are really fabulous, and if you want me to send you some of Karl's before and after pics to convince you, just say the word!!!

Love you. Hope P-cola treated you well...

Good luck! I have a friend (she's Canadian!) who went through very similar procedures over the last few years. Her results are a amazing. The process was long and tedious, but worth it in the end. Her smile is beautiful and healthy. And yay for having someone in the family who knows what questions to ask!
